6 Tips for Wearing Boyfriend Jeans Over 60, Stylists Say

If you’re looking for a pair of jeans that strikes the perfect compromise between roomy wide-leg styles and body-hugging skinny styles, look no further than boyfriend jeans.

“With a relaxed, easygoing fit, they’ve found a place in the hearts of fashionistas of all ages,” says Dominique Dupuis, fashion expert and owner of Urad. “They exude a casual elegance that can be effortlessly dressed up or down, making them a versatile addition to my wardrobe.”

For those over 60, boyfriend jeans can be particularly appealing, says Dupuis. “Their forgiving fit accommodates a range of body types.” Before you bust out those beloved boyfriend jeans, though, make sure to heed the following pro tips for wearing them with confidence.

  1. Pair them with a classic white button-down
”One of the secrets to successfully wearing boyfriend jeans over 60 is understanding how to play with proportions,” says Dupuis.

She recommends balancing out those slouchy bottoms with a more tailored, structured top — like a crisp white cotton or linen button-down, which never goes out of style.

This combo works for a wide variety of occasions, too, notes Dupuis. You can dress it up with a pair of nude heels, a sleek clutch, and a gold chain-like necklace, or dress it down with leather sneakers and a crossbody bag.

  2. Add a touch of femininity
”Boyfriend jeans are inherently masculine with their shapeless, rectangular silhouette that loosely hangs off the hips,” says Elizabeth Kosich, a certified image stylist and founder of The EveryBody Wrap®. “The boxy look can be tricky to pull off, but all it takes is a feminine touch to achieve balance.”

Kosich suggests pairing boyfriend jeans with a pussy-bow blouse in silk, chiffon, or lace. “Don’t shy away from a statement print like feminine florals or polka dots,” she adds. “Add a clean, wide cuff at the ankle to level up the denim and add some sophistication.”

Another way to infuse some unexpected femininity into your outfit is to pair your boyfriend jeans with pearl earrings, hair clips or a necklace — and a pair of kitten heels.

“From matte leather to patent leather to pony hair to metallic, anything goes when it comes to an accent shoe,” says Kosich. “If you go understated with a neutral heel and matte finish, consider stockings in a pop of color, texture, or print to add some oomph. With an attention-grabbing heel, keep hosiery neutral and finish the look with a statement lip in red or plum.”

  3. Try a statement belt
Belting those boyfriend jeans can make your outfit not only more visually interesting but also more flattering.

“Use a quality leather belt with a buckle that will make a statement,” says Dupuis. “This will cinch your waist and define your silhouette, elevating your look.”

Kosich suggests a chic snakeskin or croc-embossed belt. You can also try belting your jeans with a silk sash or vintage scarf for a unique and fashion-forward twist.

“Style them with a sloppy cuff roll at the ankle, then pair them with classic loafers, a silk or satin camisole, and a tailored blazer to keep the masculine-feminine theme going,” she adds.

  4. Find that flawless fit
Not all boyfriend jeans are created equal — for example, some may have a slightly more tapered ankle, wider hips, or a higher rise, than others. The key to pulling off this look is to find a pair that works for your particular body type.

“Look for a pair that provides comfort without being overly baggy,” advises Yenia Hernández Fonseca, a stylist, luxury fashion expert, and contributor to Margo Paige. “For women over 60, mid-rise or high-rise styles will be more flattering. Try on as many pairs from different brands as you can, and don’t be afraid to size up or down until you fall in love with the perfect pair for your body.”

  5. Go for contrasting texture
”When people style boyfriend jeans, they often just focus on creating a harmonious silhouette with the rest of their clothing choices that they often forget about texture,” says Fonseca. “Grounding the heavy fall denim with a lightweight fabric will elevate your look instantly.”

For example, consider pairing those laid-back boyfriend jeans with a luxe cashmere sweater or satin blouse. This contrasting combo exudes sophistication while maintaining a casual edge, notes Fonseca.

  6. Stick to the basics
When in doubt, you can never go wrong with a simple white T-shirt. “This is one of my favorite ways to wear boyfriend jeans,” says Tia Mula, style expert and founder of the lifestyle blog LIVE&WED. “It’s a timeless outfit that never goes out of style and is ideal for running errands or having lunch with friends.”

For a more relaxed look, roll up the cuffs, pop on a pair of flats, and add some minimalist stud earrings. Or, if you want to dress this look up a bit, layer it with a blazer and slip on a statement necklace and some pumps.
