What Your Lipstick Color Says About You, According to Experts

by Courtney Shapiro for BestLife

Whether you prefer a nude matte lip or something bright and shiny, your lipstick choice can say a lot about your personality. Oftentimes, it’s one of the first things others notice about you. “Your lipstick color speaks volumes about your mood without you having to say anything,” says Nina Vargas, a stylist and business strategist for fashion brands. Curious about what kind of impression your makeup preferences are making? Keep reading to hear from Vargas and other beauty experts about what your lipstick color says about you.

  1. Neutrals
If you gravitate towards neutral or nude shades, you may come off as shy and reserved at first. But it doesn’t mean you’re not putting thought and effort into your look.

Vargas tells BestLife that choosing a lipstick closer to your natural lip color might mean you want to be taken seriously without making too much of a statement.

Aimee Carr, makeup artist and founder of Voodoo Makeup, adds that there’s also a practicality component to this choice. A neutral staple color can work with any clothing color or occasion.

  2. Reds
Wearing red lipstick immediately indicates that you want to be noticed. Vargas says these color choices “often signal power.”

Elizabeth Kosich, founder of Elizabeth Kosich Styling, describes people who choose red lipstick as confident, passionate, and fierce. Don’t be surprised to find a CEO wearing a bold red lip or to notice that your extroverted, social friend has made this her signature shade.

  3. Pinks
Kosich says that if you opt for light pink lipstick, others might inherently trust you more. “Pink lips channel your inner nurturer and project a caring, gentle, and kind image,” she shares.

Choosing a bright pink, however, shows playfulness or maybe even flirtation. Carr describes this color choice as vivacious and says you’re likely to choose it if you’re trying to turn up the volume of your look.

  4. Clear gloss or no color
Going for clear gloss or no color at all still says a lot about your personality.

“A lip color-free person is a no-fuss, no-frills, no-nonsense kinda person who doesn’t beat around the bush, curry favor, or dress to impress,” says Kosich. “Instead, they speak their mind unapologetically and expect others to take it or leave it.”

If you go the gloss route, you’ll have that pop of shine with barely any effort. This choice signals a person on the go who is far too busy to spend time applying lipstick.

  5. Bold shades
Bright purple lip sheen? Nearly-black lipstick? If you pick out-of-the-box lipstick colors, you probably like to stand out.

“When someone pops on a bold lip color, it shows they’re not afraid to express themselves,” says makeup artist Elaina Badro. And Vargas adds that big, loud colors imply that you’re fun and outgoing.
