Autumn Wedding Guest Attire

Unlike other seasons, there’s a sophistication to fall weddings that allows for daring fashion moments. Autumn is when we start dressing again after a carefree summer of light fabrics, skin-baring designs and flowy shapes. The juxtaposition makes fall trends look and feel all the more haute couture, high drama and intellectual. For wedding guests, this means heavier fabrics, statement design details and architectural shapes. This is the time to go for glam, so here are best practices for anyone dressing for a fall wedding this season:

  1. Design
A classic cocktail dress is still a stylish and appropriate choice for a fall wedding. Its sophisticated, knee-length hem flatters any shape and the silhouette options are endless — shift, sheath, A-line, body con, fit-and-flare, one-shoulder, off-shoulder. Pick a style that balances and flatters your shape and avoid mid-calf lengths wherever possible because they’re a smidge too long and overpower most frames. Floor-length hems deliver the most drama, which are most appropriate for formal black-tie wedding galas or whimsy destination events.

  2. Colors
As a general rule, avoid black. Weddings are a festive celebration so your attire should reflect just that — think sophisticated, upscale frocks in jewel tones, happy primary colors or deep, rich hues that echo autumn’s color palette. Instead of a monochromatic look, try an abstract, slightly blurred floral print in earthy plums, olives and rusts. Or consider chic metallics to amp up the drama like brushed gold, silver, rose gold or gunmetal fabrics with luster that deliver more glamour. Always pick a hue compatible with your undertone and, when in doubt, rely on universally flattering emerald green, teal, mint or pewter — all of which flatter cool, warm and neutral skin tones.

  3. Fabric
Autumn’s heavy weight fabrics allow for statement silhouettes with volume, drape or structure. Consider a dress in rich brocade, lace or tulle and don’t shy away from appliqués or statement details like an obi belt, bows, ruffles, rosettes or a fishtail hem. Tactile fabrics like velvet and satin are appropriate too, as are unconventional looks like velvet suiting and slouchy satin pajama-style sets. Super chic!

  4. Outerwear
Staying warm is key, so plan ahead to ensure your evening wrap is just as chic as your dress. To maintain a sophisticated look, pair your party dress with either a velvet blazer or vintage fur (or faux fur) cape, or consider a chic juxtaposition of a menswear-inspired, oversized blazer and frilly dress — a fashion-forward, on-trend pairing that looks straight off the fall runways.

  5. Footwear
Choose your footwear carefully given how much standing (and dancing!) weddings require. Shop wedges or platforms for more stability, or even a classic block heel. If your features are angular, choose a pointy-toed pump. For anyone curvy, try round-toed heels. For an avant-garde look, pair a metallic open-toed, high-heel sandal with bright colored tights. And if your stilettos are sky high, consider bringing a second pair that’s lower for late night relief.
