Belts 101

Few accessories perfect an ensemble like a belt. Instant outfit-finishers, belts also accentuate, balance and camouflage any shape by creating a singular focal point that directs the eye toward it, or away from something else. In doing so, belts add flattery, interest and texture which is an extra dimension to an outfit that should always be considered. Belts can be used to your advantage, but only if you know how to leverage their powers:

  1. Everyday belts
Depending upon styling, everyday belts can be either a staple or an accent. To keep the look subtle and monochromatic, match belt color to pants and choose brushed hardware — not polished — making sure it coordinates with other metals in the outfit — jewelry, handbag hardware, shoe ornaments, hair accessories. If you want to show off your curves, flaunt the waist with a belt in a complimentary color to bottoms so it pops. To further emphasize the waist, wear contrasting colors top and bottom but make sure proportions are parsed in thirds, not halves. And don’t overthink it by keeping everyday belts simple and classic in pebbled leather, suede, canvas or linen materials.

  2. Statement belts
Leopard, python, super-sized hardware or a designer buckle, statement belts command all the attention. Pair with minimalist, monochromatic looks to not shorten the torso or overstimulate the eye. If you carry weight in the midsection, avoid thick materials and heavy hardware as they’ll only add bulk. Instead opt for a narrow metallic or patent leather belt in a contrasting color so it shines, pops and flatters. And tone down other accessories so the look isn’t over the top.

  3. Corset belts
Corset belts steal the show. They create curves, deliver drama and make an on-trend statement like no other accessory in 2023. For anyone with a full midriff, try an obi-style belt that’s just as wide but with less bulk and hardware-free. Pair either a corset belt or obi with a dress or jumpsuit for a turnkey monochromatic look, or try wearing over an untucked, white crisp blouse for a peplum effect. Also consider layering over a blazer or light jacket for more coverage, interest and tone-on-tone texture. Wear three-quarter length sleeves — a sleeve-roll, bracelet sleeve jacket or ballet sleeve t-shirt — to draw more attention to midsection and create the illusion of a waist.

  4. Belt bags
Belt bags are form and function at its finest. A riff on the ever-popular fanny pack, modern belt bags are a sophisticated upgrade of the 1980s classic that is more refined, chic and high-style. Either cinch or slouch at the waist for a stylish, hands-free look, or consider as a short crossbody slung across chest or back. Many have adjustable straps that convert to a long crossbody or shoulder bag, so consider versatility when shopping belt bags.

  5. Outerwear belts
Don’t forget belts can be layered over any look — even outerwear. Minimize volume of shoulder season basics like maxi vests, cashmere cardigan wraps, flannel shackets and light jackets by cinching at the waist. Just remember the more layers and bulkier the garments, the narrower the belt. Try a skinny metallic mesh belt over a cashmere cardigan wrap, a thin rope belt over a shearing vest or a one-inch tooled belt over a soft and supple suede safari jacket. You’ll love the look!
