Colors for Cool Undertones

Anyone with a cool undertone is an exotic mix of delicate and dramatic, which makes for an equally exotic wardrobe color palette. These blue-based skin tones set the stage for a range of exciting hues from jewel tones to icy pastels to electric neons. Knowing your precise season determines how much you can turn up — or down — the intensity dial, but there are a few cool hues that are universally flattering to both Winters and Summers alike. If you don’t already have these colors in your wardrobe, consider adding them to your spring shopping list:

  1. Light neutral
Picking up the pinky undertones of blue-based complexions is one of the best ways to flatter cool undertones. If your coloring is muted, try a dusty, softer pink. For anyone with a high-intensity contrast, consider a lighter, icier pastel pink. Once you find your optimal pink hue, the effect will be rosier cheeks and an overall healthy glow.

  2. Dark neutral
For anyone cool-undertoned wanting to detox from black, try gray. Its continuum is broad, ranging from dove gray to steel to charcoal. Find a gray that matches to your hair value so, for example, if you’re blonde opt for light grays. If in doubt, choose pewter which is universally flattering to both cool and warm undertones.

  3. Accent color
Everyone needs a power hue and magenta works wonders for cool-undertoned people. Vibrant, dramatic and alluring, it’s a red-based purple that lives between violet and red on the color wheel. Not only is it cool-skin tone compatible, magenta evokes cheerfulness, happiness and appreciation for our personal achievements which makes it a feel-good hue full of good vibes.

  4. Jewel tone
A gorgeous midway red, True Red’s neutrality is its superpower. That means cool and warm undertones alike can wear it and be equally supported, flattered and enhanced by its perfectly balanced not-too-cool-not-too-warm-middle-of-the-road hue. And don’t forget opposite the color wheel from red is green, making True Red particularly complementary to green-eyed people.

  5. Pastel
Lavender is a chameleon when it comes to complementing undertones. When paired with blue-based skin tones it appears cool, and vice versa with warm complexions. Enjoy its full range from light to dark, and its versatility by pairing with gray, cool beige, pink and denim. It’s easy to be impressed by lavender’s range once you discover its limitless possibilities.
