Décolletage 101

Big busted women are the envy of all, though their wardrobe challenges are not. In fact, most complain their large bust size is “something to deal with” which is anything but positive. Suggestive, often sloppy and always on display, buxom busts can be a fine line between tasteful and trashy. Thoughtful styling is essential to balance, de-emphasize and distract away from in order to look pulled together. It takes effort, so here are the top five best practices for big busts:

  1. Bra fitting
The only place to start is with a proper bra fitting. Find a bra expert at a local lingerie store or big box retailer who can advise on the best fit, best size and best brands. Once you’re matched to your perfect bra, buy one in nude to layer under t-shirts and another in your most serviceable dark neutral. Consider buying a third with a T-back for tank tops and dresses.

  2. Open necklines
The higher the neckline the larger the bust appears, so keep it open by opting for scoop, square or sweetheart necklines that show a little skin — but not too much — which has a lengthening effect. Keep the chest clean and uncluttered, avoiding chunky necklaces that draw attention to the area. Instead opt for sparkly studs or statement huggies that frame the face and draw attention up and toward it. A decorative, thick headband works as a decoy too.

  3. Emphasize waist
The easiest way to minimize the bust is by emphasizing another asset. Enter, the waist. Highlight the waistline with a trendy corset belt, obi wrap or classic leather belt with statement buckle to direct attention toward it. Also wear three-quarter length sleeves that force the eyes to rest on the waist. Keep all other elements streamlined and uncluttered to maintain a balanced silhouette.

  4. Wrap dresses
Wrap dresses work miracles on all body shapes, which includes buxom ones. Make sure the v-neck has ample coverage over cleavage, but enough openness so chest and neck are elongated. Cinch the sash belt to accentuate the waist, then finish with a bow at side waist to keep attention on waist and away from cleavage.

  5. Lights and solids
Always remember dark colors, patterns and prints add volume, so keep it light and monochromatic above the waist. Mix it up with a range of your best neutrals from light to dark and keep details minimal to avoid volume — no statement buttons, chest pockets, shoulder pads or embellishments. Consider a peplum top that simultaneously balances bust and accentuates waist — a win-win!
