Double Chins

Wardrobe is a useful tool to accentuate assets, though it can also camouflage features we prefer to downplay. In fact color, line and design are magicians at minimizing just as much as maximizing, making wardrobe anyone’s secret weapon. Surprisingly, double chins can be reduced more easily than you’d think with these simple tricks:

  1. Light colors
All colors cast off and reflect against our skin. Dark shades tend to cast darkness and shadows, which can make an area appear bigger and more obvious. Conversely, light colors remove dark lines and shadows which has a minimizing effect. Switching to tops in your best light neutrals and pastel accent colors can work wonders to visually minimize a double chin. For warm undertones, Pantone’s 2024 Color of the Year Peach Fuzz is a great place to start.

  2. Scarves
While scarves are an obvious solution to conceal a double chin, it’s important to pick the right patterns and colors for the best results. Avoid bold patterns that draw attention to the neck and instead opt for soft, gentle motifs that match to your hair and eye colors to draw the gaze up, distracting away from the chin area.

  3. Open necklines
Opening up the neckline is a more gracious silhouette for double chins, so try scoop necks, square necks or even off-the-shoulder Bardot necklines for more flattering shapes that visually elongate from chest to face. Avoid crewnecks, which truncate the torso and frame the neck and chin area.

  4. Cold shoulder blouses
Showing off the shoulders is a great way to distract away from a double chin. Try a cold shoulder blouse in your best neutral, or universally flattering colors burgundy, chocolate brown or emerald green. Keep the look uncluttered by avoiding pattern, and consider matching bottoms and top colors for a monochromatic color column that lengthens and strengthens.

  5. Accessorize
Using accessories to distract away from a double chin is always effective. Accentuate the waistline with a statement belt buckle or pendant necklace that forces the eye down, or draw attention to the face with signature sunglasses, a bright headband or sparkly huggie earrings that frame the face. Always harmonize metals, stones and other design details to undertone, color palette and scale for best results.
