Jeans AW22

Women of any body shape or age can rock a great pair of jeans. Denim is universally flattering, chic and comfortable, which is a winning combination for looking and feeling stylish. But with so many options it’s sometimes tough to know what to buy. Following denim best practices for color, cut, fit and design will keep you both on-trend and looking fabulous, so here are tips to guide you through the purchase process:

  • Color
For jean color, the trick is knowing what you want to emphasize or de-emphasize, then dressing accordingly. Remember dark colors are camouflaging, so if there’s something you want to smooth, conceal or minimize, go for a dark denim wash. Light colored jeans work magic for fair complexions or dressing in warm months. Colored denim is a way to dress up jeans for evening or add drama for a fashion statement.

  • Cut
Fit is everything when it comes to denim. High rise waists are more flattering as they help elongate the legs and conceal muffin top at once. The most universally flattering jean cut is the classic bootleg — it works on all figures thanks to its trend-proof silhouette, full-length hemline and overall elongating effect. As a general rule, fit should loosen as we age but be sure to stop short of baggy to avoid looking frumpy.

  • Fit
Jeggings are perfect for straight bodies when paired with oversized, long tops like chunky sweaters or long, untucked shirts. A wide leg trouser-style jean has a forgiving fit and so works well for those wider below the waist than above. Try a flared jean for hourglass shapes because it reinforces the curves. For those who want to play it safe, the classic bootleg is not too tight or loose so flatters all body shapes.

  • Design
Back patch pockets help add volume which could be good or bad depending on your body shape. Make sure they don’t sit too low or are too big, otherwise the optical illusion effect will be a lower, wider bum. Note asymmetrical lines are slimming, so angled pockets are great for fuller figures. Finally, length matters. From cropped to extra-long, be sure to update your jean wardrobe as trends shift to stay current and look your most chic.

One of my all-time favorite looks is an untucked, crisp white shirt (collar popped!) paired with straight-cut or skinny jeans and driving moccasins. It’s a timeless, chic look at any age!
