Minimalist Dressing 101

For many, having too many wardrobe choices takes up unnecessary time, causes anxiety and adds stress. Conversely, having fewer choices empowers us to do more with less and liberates us to invest time, energy and money in things that matter more. For this reason, minimalist dressing is an easy way to improve quality of life and transform the process of getting dressed into a ritual of self-love.

A capsule collection is an edited wardrobe of up to a dozen trend-proof, seasonless pieces that can be dressed up or down to suit any occasion. The idea is to edit down to only what you need and love, achieving the most efficient wardrobe possible without sacrificing style or newness. Anyone can follow the easy formula because it’s gender-neutral, ageless and 100% inclusive: 2 suits + 2 bottoms + 5 tops = 40+ outfits.

Many women believe minimalist dressing is limiting so chase trends from season to season which defeats the purpose of personal style. Creating your own signature look should be rooted in the colors, shapes, proportions and scale that look best on you. Taking a scientific approach to dressing enhances personal attributes and minimizes physical weaknesses, which ultimately transforms you into your best self. Authenticity is the result, and that’s what makes you most memorable. Capsule dressing ensures you’re the star of the show, not the outfit.

Keeping clothes minimal also lets you amp up accessories—jewelry, belts, scarves, ties, pocket squares, purses, shoes, hosiery, hats, gloves, outerwear — which is where I encourage clients to add bold pops of color, sparkle, prints and texture. When done right, every outfit combination will look original and feel fresh.

Ready? Here’s your roadmap:

  1. Image consultation
Understanding what looks best on you (colors, shapes, scale, fit) will help you make fewer mistakes with wardrobe additions and subtractions, so start with a comprehensive image analysis with a certified Image Consultant (that’s me!).

  2. Purge your closet
Using your image analysis findings as a roadmap will separate out unflattering garments from flattering ones. When done with discipline and rigor, you will be left with a wardrobe full of only flattering clothes. Also, remove anything you haven’t worn for over 24 months. Try to detach from emotions during the purging process since a sentimental approach typically drives bad decisions.

  3. Build your capsule
Consider color, fabric, pieces and style when building your capsule wardrobe. These 4 elements need to be in harmony to ensure all pieces mix-and-match well together. And make sure you LOVE everything! Limit colors to your 2 best neutrals (1 light, 1 dark) and your best (or favorite) fashion color. Fabrics should be seasonless and easy care, wash and wear. Make sure all pieces flatter your shape and support your lifestyle (e.g., leggings over skirts if you’re sporty). Finally, select items based on the message you want to send to the world:

    1. Authoritative/strong: Dark, solid colors; structured suiting; smooth, crisp fabrics; straight lines.

    2. Approachable/soft: Light colors, soft prints; casual separates; draped, flowing fabrics; curved lines.

  4. Curate your accessories
This is where you can define your personal brand. Have fun with accessories but remember less is more, with one bold color or print going a long way. Also remember that a bright red lip is considered an accessory.

  5. Fill in the blanks
Shop for anything that’s missing so your capsule collection is cohesive and optimizes all possible outfit combinations. Make a “Needs List” and determine budget before going shopping. Go slowly, be selective, always use your image analysis findings as guidelines and don’t over purchase! Remember less is more.

  6. Refresh regularly
Having fewer pieces means you will wear them more often, which increases wear and tear. Make sure you stay spiffy by upgrading core pieces whenever necessary. A capsule wardrobe that looks tired and frumpy defeats the purpose! Find a great tailor for needed repairs and subscribe to your favorite brands’ newsletters to shop bargains when replacing and/or upgrading key pieces. Donate unwanted garments to your local Salvation Army, Good Will or Dress for Success charities. And don’t forget to get a receipt for a tax write-off purposes.

Give it a try. This minimalist way of dressing comes with so many benefits!
