No Regrets

Fashion can spark an adrenaline rush that’s thrilling, intoxicating and addictive. It’s a hedonistic pursuit for many, which can be an expensive proposition. In reality many purchases end in retail regrets, proving not all trends are worth the spend. It takes discipline to choose wisely and knowing the return policy before purchasing is critical. Here is guidance for which trends to avoid this season, and why:

  1. Pantless trend
The no-pants trend is hard to miss this season. From blazer micro-mini dresses to stand alone body suits to underwear as outerwear, pantless styles have been spotted on celebrities, the runways and street style everywhere. Chances are the look will be a one-season wonder due to its lack of appropriateness so take a pass because, well, it’s ridiculous.

  2. Sweater dresses
Cozy sweater dresses are tempting, but don’t bother. Knitwear has a sneaky way of “growing”, which means it stretches and eventually loses its shape. Plus, pilling can be an issue which visually lowers the quality quickly. So avoid sweater dresses, even those that are a blend with stretch fibers like spandex, Lycra® or elastane.

  3. Sheer clothing
Sheer clothing can be a fun peek-a-boo look, but its shelf life is always short lived. It’s a novelty look that can lack age appropriateness in record time, not to mention it’s too provocative for most settings. Such limited wearability makes it not worth the investment, so consider other party trends that have a proven track-record of cycling back in fashion more often.

  4. Super sweaters
Super sweaters are bold and bright, but ultimately too overwhelming. Oftentimes it’s all about the sweater itself with the statement stripes, overpowering color blocking and oversized shapes, which inevitably upstage the wearer. Plus the knitwear invariably stretches, becomes misshapen and pills. As a rule of thumb, avoid clothing with bulkiness and large motifs, and opt for fine knits, patterns and prints that are more to scale and less trend-forward.

  5. Mod styles
Mod is back, though you might want to think twice before going all-in on this trend. Its funkiness is limiting, short lived and, above all, easily skews costume-y. Psychedelic prints with maxi hemlines are tough for most to pull off anyway, plus it will look over-the-top and passé after fall 2023. Resist this statement trend and opt to invest in more timeless looks with staying power.
