Pattern Don'ts

Statement patterns really know how to make an impression — good, or bad. Since our features soften with age, bold patterns become increasingly difficult to carry off. Not only can they dominate the wearer, they can also send the wrong message depending upon motif. Here are a few patterns worth avoiding later in life, and why:

  1. Abstracts
Abstract patterns are difficult to pull off the older we get. Simply put, the ultra-modern aesthetic makes a mature person look like they’re trying too hard. Abstract motifs also tend to be bold in shape, scale and color, which quickly overpowers and drowns out the wearer.

  2. Botanicals
Always consider context when it comes to patterns. Exotic botanicals are fun on vacation, but in everyday life they look out of place. Instead of looking like you just deplaned from a beach vacation, opt for a classic plaid or check and save the tropical motifs for Miami.

  3. Ditsy
Professional cowgirls notwithstanding, ditsy prints don’t look appropriate on anyone over age 25. The sweet and innocent motif reads young and girl, which doesn’t suit a grown-up’s image. Not only does it send the wrong message, it’s a disconnect when it comes to personal branding.

  4. Geometric
As we age our contrast softens, making it tougher to carry bold patterns like geometrics. The striking shapes and angles can also appear too harsh, plus the color pairings are often more intense and high contrast than our own. This not only makes you appear older and less relevant, but also invisible.

  5. Florals
Most florals are gorgeous and appropriate for all ages, but a few are not. Steer clear of any super-sized scales, ultra vivid palettes and retro styles. All will make you look more vintage than the pattern itself.
