Spring Essentials

Each new season should start with a wardrobe refresh ritual, and now is the time to update spring essentials. Of course updating trend pieces is a good place to start, though appropriateness and functionality also need addressing. Our seasonal basics should be durable, versatile and timeless, so if you don’t have these basics anchoring your spring wardrobe, now is the time to fill in the wardrobe gaps:

  1. Trench coat
Spring showers call for a classic trench coat. Chances are yours needs updating or, if you don’t already have one, now is the time to invest in a quality one. Length matters, so shop cropped styles or longer ones that end either at the mid-thigh or mid-calf to maintain flattering proportions. Color is important too, as the classic khaki trench hue tends to skew warm. For cool undertones, consider a trench in black, gray, olive green or statement yellow — soft lemon chiffon, neutral true yellow or acid citronelle — for a fun pop of color.

  2. Cardigan sweater
Spring is a transition season that brings frosty mornings, toasty days and chilly nights, making piling on and peeling off layers a daily routine. Enter the classic cardigan, a springtime lifesaver most can’t live without. For a touch of luxe, try a rayon or silk jersey cardigan to elevate your daily uniform, and a three-quarter length sleeve to both draw attention to the waist and showcase a stack of statement bracelets.

  3. Tunic dress
Every spring wardrobe should be anchored by a classic tunic dress. Lightweight and loose, they have great airflow to keep you cool and comfy through the warm seasons. The A-line shape is camouflaging too, and the decorative neckline directs the gaze up toward the face, distracting away from any problem areas. Tunic dresses also travel well and can be layered with pants, leggings or skirts for more warmth, variety, or style — or all three.

  4. Espadrilles
Espadrilles are a cool way to stay comfy and chic from spring to summer. They come in a range of heel heights from flat to stacked to sky-high platform wedge, and in a range of fun, statement-making pops of color and patterns. Espadrilles pair well with both street style looks and date night outfits, plus they don’t break the bank, making them affordable to replace as often as needed.

  5. Crossbody bag
Spring through summer is a carefree time so when it comes to a staple handbag, think hands-free. Crossbody bags are super stylish, plus the diagonal line is elongating head-to-toe. If your frame is petite, shop more compact, flat styles to maintain correct scale and not overwhelm your height. Belt bags are another hands-free option, though look for convertible styles that transform to either a crossbody or sling for maximum versatility.
