Tights 101

Few fashion accessories have the power to bridge seasons like tights. Their ability to layer makes transition pieces possible, extending our spring and summer faves well past their shelf life. Tights also add a splash of style without breaking the bank, proving they deliver on both form and function in a pinch. Chances are you’re not maximizing their full potential, so consider these tips and tricks for styling tights through the next shoulder season:

  1. Tights rules
The first rule of wearing tights is that there are no rules. They have range, so give yourself permission to push the limits. Pair tights with your favorite summer sundress in a bright accent color if dress is neutral, or a more subdued hue that grounds and balances if dress is vibrant. Style with knee-high equestrian boots, jean jacket and detachable faux fur collar to amp up visual interest and personal style. Tights let you take liberties with shorter hemlines too, so now’s the time to wear a micro mini or short shorts. Keep bottoms premium and sophisticated in wool, suede or leather materials, and tights should be either in a statement color or tone-on-tone hue that adds texture to the outfit’s composition. This is also a super chic day-to-night look.

  2. Unexpected pairings
The more unexpected the pairing, the more chic. Go for juxtapositions that create balance through opposites like sneakers with micro fishnets, combat boots with semi-sheer florals and opaque, bright colors with open-toed summer stiletto sandals. If those looks feel too bold, go for more classic yet chic pairings like Mary Jane flats with large hole fishnets, velvet smoking slippers with back-seamed tights and classic pumps with tone-on-tone pin dot hosiery. Still unexpected, still chic.

  3. Surprise and delight
Use tights to create an outfit’s focal point that adds a pop of color, texture or both. Keep it minimalist with a solid opaque tight in a vibrant jewel tone paired with a high-slit, monochromatic skirt for a fun peek-a-boo effect. Or, watch how printed tights — think florals, python, leopard — add dimension to airy, flirty, babydoll dresses. Style with a leather moto jacket and engineer booties for a perfect balance of sweet and strong. For a more architectural look, consider black geometric cutout tights with a warm-weather LBD, platform tassel loafers and a military flight jacket. Finish with a crossbody bag and thin, long black scarf to keep cozy.

  4. Double up
Think outside of the box and consider layers. Go for cozy by pairing opaque tights with slouchy socks and clogs, then style with a peasant skirt, fitted sweater, fur vest and rancher hat. Try a head-to-toe neutral palette so it’s more bohemian and sophisticated, not gypsy. For those more daring, channel your inner hipster by teaming opaque tights with fishnets. Start with a base layer of monochromatic tights, then add large hole fishnets over them. Have fun with color combinations, trying tone-on-tone hues, complementary colors or bold and neutral pairings to experiment with versatility. Depending upon the styling, this look can adapt to smart casual attire within creative settings, or a swanky, sexy date night once temperatures drop.

  5. Tights no-no’s
Skip teaming tights with denim shorts or jeans that are so shredded, torn and holey they require a base layer. Both looks lack sophistication and style savvy, which defeats the purpose. Tights are meant to elevate an outfit, add visual interest and enhance personal image, which neither of those looks achieve.
