Trend Watch AW22

Despite seasons being largely trend-focused, the classics still find a way to reappear. Case in point, AW22. There’s an abundance of iconic pieces back in the spotlight this season which means one thing — it’s time to refresh those capsules with the good stuff.

Everything old is new again, yes, but these classics remain restrained and elegant despite the zhuzh — coats are a little boxier, skirts are a little longer, shoes are a little funner. None of it feels forced, only fresh. These treasures have been modernized just enough to remain timeless for the next while, so hurry up and stock up while you can — the clock is ticking! Don’t miss out on these top 5 classics:

  1. Trench coat
The classic trench is back but with unexpected twists like puffy sleeves, ruffles and florals. These bolder statements might be for the fashion-forward so, if you’re feeling less adventurous, still shop the trend but on a smaller scale — diminutive prints, patterns, pockets and lapels so the silhouette doesn’t overpower. Consider a cropped trench at the waist or full-length below the knee to keep with flattering proportions.

  2. Biker boots
You don’t need a Harley Davidson to adopt this trend. Biker boots these days aren’t hardcore like they used to be so look for toned-down versions with less hardware, or no hardware at all. Do try the quintessential 3/4-high biker boot shaft to keep the look fresh and authentic. If the trend feels too intimidating, start with a minimalist leather boot with a thicker lug sole to channel the vibe.

  3. Maxi hemlines
Maxi skirts are great for day, night and at any age. This season’s tailored, floor-sweeping maxi skirts are the hot trend, which happens to be a less bohemian and more smart silhouette. Mix with traditional suiting or pair with a cropped jacket, chunky sweater or belted blazer in the same color to create a monochromatic column that elongates. Wear with biker boots to really mix it up!

  4. Embellished ballerina flats
Every season needs bling! For AW22 it’s in the form of bejeweled slippers which happen to be just the right amount of sparkle in just the right place for those over 60. Shiny and glittery draw attention to fine lines, wrinkles, veins and scars, so footwear is great placement for bling for the senior set. Everyone else can go to town with the bling. But remember that a little glitter goes a long way, so limit the sequins, studs and crystal accessories to avoid looking over the top.

  5. Pea coat
The classic pea coat is back! Navy blue is a flattering power neutral for all and, as we age, better than black since it’s less harsh, stark and dark. Navy blue also complements blonde, red and gray hair beautifully. Consider hardware details closely, though, as shiny metal may be too busy and overpowering, making monochromatic buttons the better choice. Remember, less is more. Always!
