Wearing Red

Masters at the power of persuasion have one thing in common — they all wear red. Of course everyone knows the hue telegraphs romance and power, but brain science has actually proven it’s an aphrodisiac. A 2007 study on red’s subconscious effects revealed it increased physically attractiveness, sexual desirability and romantic feelings more than any other color. Appropriately named The Red Dress Effect, the study confirmed wearing red makes a woman more attractive to a man. Beyond romance, it’s the most persuasive color in the rainbow so here are 5 tips on how else to leverage its powers:

  1. Seduction
Let’s start with the obvious: Romance and red go hand in hand, which is why it’s great to wear on first dates. Studies show men find women wearing it more attractive and women subconsciously know red captures the male gaze. Though while it’s a persuasive color when dating, for some red can be too much for first dates. In the beginning consider choosing soft, disarming colors that build trust instead, saving red for when you’re ready to move things forward. It will send a clear message when the time is right!

  2. Attention
Red is known for being attention grabbing because, well, it works. It’s a surefire way to get noticed in a crowd so wear red to the next cocktail party, charity event or gala. Pair with a bold crimson lip or scarlet manicure and leave your LBD at home. Conspicuous red is the new black.

  3. Dominance
Red is the universal color for power. It commands attention which is a useful tool in the workplace. Wear red for a headshot, while leading a power meeting or delivering a keynote speech to reinforce your authority and prominence on the org chart. The same goes for networking events.

  4. Intimidation
Subconsciously, red can intimidate. It signifies confidence and strength, with a side of confrontation. Red helps squash the competition so don it when angling for a job promotion, running in an election or vying for a committee seat. Red is the strongest non-verbal cue to communicate you’re the right person for the job.

  5. Revenge
Every woman should have a Red Revenge Dress at the ready for a high school reunion, break-up date or any gathering where you’ll be seeing your ex. Ideally the cut is daring, fit is meticulous and shade says “You missed out, pal.”
