Y2K Style

As the saying goes “Everything old is new again”, and this time it’s Y2K fashion. An era when sitcom Friends reigned supreme, Y2K was all about having a playful style that didn’t take itself too seriously. Glitter, vibrant colors and extreme cuts made a splash then, and are making a splash now with Y2K’s resurgence coming in hot. Watch for these signature Y2K looks on the runways, on the streets and, possibly, in the back of your closet:

  1. Ballerina flats
Ballerina flats’ popularity has been revving up, and now it’s going at top speed as a top trend. High-necked Marky Jane ballerina flats are the It Girl’s shoe of choice this season, though any classic Hepburn-style will do just fine. Pair with a vibrant stocking or sparkly sock for extra oomph.

  2. Bustiers
A woman’s décolletage is center stage this season with the bustier trend front and center. Dressed up (satin) or dressed down (denim), this season’s bustiers are serving up mega femininity with a side of vixen. Temper the look from going over-the-top by pairing with distressed jeans for both a high/low look and hard/soft balance at once.

  3. Platform heels
Y2K-style sky-high platforms are the current mood, and the more chunky the better. Think platform in the form of round-toed booties, pointy-toed stilettos, strappy wedges or summer slides, each style elevating you an extra 2 to 3 inches. To really rock the trend, look for color-blocked styles in vibrant hues or shiny, glittery metallics.

  4. Cargo pants
Cargo pants are proving to have nine lives. Dominating the runways for a few seasons now, they’re hanging on for yet another. Anything from quiet luxury silk cargos to hip-hop-inspired ginormous cuts are still on-trend, so anything goes with this look. This season try a distressed version with a loose cut to stay most on-trend.

  5. Baby tees
You can never have enough graphic tees, making the Y2K baby tee craze right on time. Stock up on crop tops with fitted silhouettes and go bold with metallic, studded or rhinestone embellishments for an extra splash. If you can’t find what you like at the mall, take a pair of scissors to an old graphic tee and cut out the neckline, chop off the sleeves and crop the hem at the natural waist, then make a keyhole slit at the neck for an unexpected, edgy design detail. Voilà! A classic Y2K DIY hack, made new again.
