Year in Review 2023

Every year has its fashion trend winners, losers and one hit wonders, and 2023 was no exception. It’s been a banner year for winners like Mary Janes, double denim and metallic everything, making 2023 fashions easy to embrace and fun to wear. However there were plenty of far-fetched and fleeting trends, so here’s a look back at the year’s epic fails and cameos we likely won’t ever see again:

  1. No-pants trend
From underwear as outerwear to micro-micro mini blazer dresses, this year’s pantless trend looked like you left the house forgetting to put pants on. As much as I love a good legs-for-days look, the no-pants trend is just not wearable in the real world, making it a celebrity-only look that lacks inclusivity. That’s never a good look.

  2. Sheer clothing
Similar to the no-pants trend, the sheer clothing look is often exclusive to celebrities too. Unfortunately (or, perhaps, fortunately?), a see-through sheath dress showcasing bra and panties is not such a practical — or possible — street style look for the rest of us. When trends are unrealistic and exclusionary to the common consumer, it’s not so fashionable.

  3. Jean maxi skirts
The floor-grazing, patchwork denim maxi skirt trend had a moment this year, albeit brief. In truth, the boho chic look is tough to pull off. Denim tends to be coarse, heavy and stiff fabric and when there’s a lot of it, it quickly overwhelms. Women with petite or fine-boned frames were wise to steer clear.

  4. Barbie Pink
Fluorescent hues typically have a short shelf life in fashion and Barbie Pink is no different. While fun, frilly and frothy, the high-chroma hue is also high-vibration, high-intensity and high impact. That’s a lot all at once, making its fifteen minutes of fame “enough is enough”. Thanks for the summer fling, Barbie Pink!

  5. Viva Magenta
Pantone’s 2023 Color of the Year Viva Magenta has been an exciting pop of color to add to any wardrobe, especially when it comes to accessories. Plus the carmine hue is a pseudo-neutral, complementing both warm and cool complexions alike. In the red family, it engenders power, confidence and fun with its energizing boldness. However all good things must come to an end. Adieu Viva Magenta, bonjour Peach Fuzz!
