Elevating Flannel

Very few fabrics make a statement like flannel. It communicates “classic Americana” like none other, but don’t pigeon hole it into western wear just yet. Spotted everywhere from runways to street style, flannel has range. It can be dressed up or down like any other traditional pattern, and accessorized. Plus its “cozy chic” iconic style transcends trend, age and gender, making it a wardrobe superhero for all. Now that fall is here, it’s time to start taking your flannel more seriously:

  1. Oversized
An oversized flannel shirt doesn’t have to look sloppy. Try an overshirt that extends to mid-thigh, then balance the bulk by pairing with leggings, a turtleneck and knee-high boots. For a more tailored look, layer white shirting underneath and wear with classic loafers. Finish the look with a crossbody purse to tamp down and control the bulk.

  2. Cinched
Try accessorizing flannel with a belt, which elevates the look instantly. Avoid a thick belt, however, as it will add bulk to the already bulky flannel fabric. Instead go skinny, and play around with belt placement. If you’re thick in the middle, place it empire-style to cinch at the smallest part of your torso. For anyone low waisted, try a slouchy look with a rope belt. Pair with a classic bootcut pant, jeans or straight skirt to balance the volume up top.

  3. Cropped
Flannel jackets are on-trend, so shop cropped shackets but don’t be scared of their boxy shape. Anything cropped at the natural waist keeps the silhouette parsed in thirds, which are the most flattering proportions. The cropped style also keeps the flannel pattern from overpowering in case it’s super-sized. Balance the shacket with a wide leg trouser or ankle flare white jean for an elevated, high-style look.

  4. Knotted
Lightweight, cozy flannel shirting is a wardrobe staple from fall to spring. For those who feel a classic waist tuck creates too much bulk, try a half tuck or knotting shirt ends at the waist to keep the waistline clean, sleek and minimized. For an urban, sophisticated look, pair with menswear suiting separates like chalk stripe charcoal trousers or a pinstriped blazer. The half-tucked or knotted shirt keeps the waist nipped and on display, adding a feminine touch that balances the otherwise masculine menswear lines.

  5. Bling
Creating high-low looks is a mashup of self-expression and high-style that packs a big punch. Style your flannel shirt buttoned closed with a statement necklace over the shirt but under the collar so it’s both prominent and toned down at once. Or, accessorize with drop earrings that add just enough sparkle to make an interesting juxtaposition with the rugged flannel. Try different types of jewelry — gold, silver, beading, chains, pearls, turquoise, lucite, horn, rhinestones — until you find something that works and is uniquely you. It’s a process, but you will eventually find your signature style through trial and error.
