Face Shapes and Hairstyles

The right cut and color can completely transform your face and features — into either better, or worse. Knowing your face shape and skin undertone is the first step in finding the most flattering hair style. Here are some scientific guidelines to create balance and keep you looking your best:

  • Round

    • Goal is to elongate and slim face.

    • Keep hair shorter with off-center, diagonal part; add crown height and side wisps.

    • Avoid solid bangs.

  • Square

    • Goal is to elongate and soften face.

    • Keep hair shorter with off-center, diagonal part; add layers, crown height and wisps to sides, forehead and/or jawline.

  • Triangle

    • Goal is to balance face top to bottom.

    • Add height and width everywhere but jawline; add wispy bangs and keep hair close to jawline.

    • For men, add sideburns.

  • Heart

    • Goal is to balance face bottom to top.

    • Create fullness from cheekbones down; add bangs.

  • Diamond

    • Goal is to fill negative space on top and bottom of face.

    • Create fullness above and below cheekbones; add bangs.

  • Rectangle

    • Goal is to shorten and soften face.

    • Add fullness and layers on sides; add bangs.

    • Avoid long, straight hair.

  • Oval

    • Goal is to maintain natural symmetry of face.

    • This perfectly-balanced face shape is the gold-standard ideal, so anything goes!

Color can be equally as transforming as style. Remember to always match hair color temperature to your undertone so that hair and skin are in harmony. When selecting hair color, go 1 to 2 shades lighter or darker than your own color for the most natural look.
